Community gardening is more than just a trend; it’s a movement that brings people together, fosters relationships, and promotes sustainability. The Newberry Garden Club is at the forefront of this initiative supporting JD Mercado in his efforts to create a Community Garden to grow vegetables to feed families in and around Newberry.

This blog post will explore the importance of community gardening, the specific initiatives supported by Newberry Garden Club, and how you can get involved.

The Importance of Community Gardening

Community gardening serves multiple purposes that extend beyond simply growing food. Here are some key benefits:

  • Social Connections: Community gardens bring neighbors together, build social networks, and empower residents with food‑growing skills. These relationships help ensure produce reaches the people who need it most and strengthen long‑term food security.

  • Direct access to fresh, nutritious produce: Community gardens increase the availability of fresh vegetables right where people live. This improves diet quality and helps families eat more fruits and vegetables.

  • Health Benefits: Gardening is a physical activity that encourages a healthy lifestyle. It provides access to fresh produce, which can improve nutrition and overall well-being.

  • Reduced grocery costs for struggling households: Families who participate in or receive produce from community gardens save significant money. A single plot can yield hundreds of pounds of vegetables per season, reducing grocery bills and stretching tight budgets.

  • Educational Opportunities: Community gardens serve as outdoor classrooms where individuals of all ages can learn about horticulture, sustainability, and nutrition.

Help Make the Community Garden a Reality

As of October 2026, the Newberry Community Garden has a lovely plot of land in the northwest corner of Lois Forte Park. Newberry City Manager Jordan Marlowe has been instrumental in finding an appropriate location, having it fenced, providing a garden shed and running water into the area.

Now it is our turn to help raise funds to purchase the lumber for waist-high garden beds, compost to fill them, organic fertilizer, fish emulsion, hand tools, seeds and seedlings. Businesses are already pledging to sponsor a garden bed for a total donation of $360. There is space for ten 4 X 8 ft. garden beds at this location.

Many hands make light work, and we invite you to join this effort to grow food for families in the community. Help will be needed to actually build the garden beds, fill them with compost and plant seeds and/ or seedlings. With the aid of several Master Gardeners, input from UF/IFAS and Dr. Maria McLeod, Food Forest expert, we anticipate successful and abundant harvests.

All the produce will be given away to community members.

Conclusion

Community gardening is a powerful way to bring people together, promote sustainability, and improve the quality of life in Newberry. The Newberry Garden Club exemplifies how collective efforts can lead to meaningful change. By participating in these initiatives, you can contribute to a greener, healthier community. Whether you join the club, volunteer, or start your own garden, every effort counts. Let’s cultivate a thriving community together!
